In order to replace the shattered outer glass on the iPhone 3G/ 3GS, we need to remove the front assembly from the logic board. The LCD (which creates the image), is then removed. Now the fun part. We carefully remove all glass shards from the iPhone mid-board assembly (this takes a while and dealing with the sharp glass is tricky). On this generation of iPhone, Apple gave technicians the ability to replace the outer glass/ digitizer part separately from the LCD.
