iPhone 4
Apple really broke the mold when they came out with the iPhone 4. This iPhone was a total redesign of the device. While it’s a very powerful device, there is one thing that will end up stinging those proud iPhone 4 owners…. the new screen design.
In the fist generation of iPhone, Apple made the front screen assembly all one piece. That meant that if you cracked the outer glass on your iPhone, you needed to also replace the digitizer (that detects your finger movements) and the LCD. This made it an expensive repair and many people just made due with the cracks.
With the iPhone 3G/ 3GS, they allowed the digitizer to be replaced separately from the LCD. This lowered the cost of the replacement part and therefore, made the repair more affordable for iPhone owners.
Now enter the iPhone 4. With this new design, Apple went back to the idea of having the entire front assembly be one piece. That means if you crack the outer glass, you also need to replace that fancy Retina display and the digitizer. This makes the cost of the part much higher (about $100) and therefore increases the cost of the repair.
In addition to the part cost being higher, the new design requires us to remove most of the iPhone parts in order to get to the front screen. As you can imagine, this takes a while. We get the joy of keeping track of every screw, because Apple has ensured that every screw is a different size (thanks, Apple).
All that being said, it still makes sense to fix that cracked screen. A replacement iPhone 4, out of contract will run over $500. Ouch. Get it fixed. Expect the repair to take about an hour at iSupportU.
Here is a short list of common repairs with prices of those repairs:
- Front glass replacement: $109
- Back glass replacement: $35
- Battery replacement: $49
- Color change (blue, yellow, red, green, white or clear): $169
